Would a Gun Tempt You To Buy a Used SUV or Pickup?

Saturday May 31, 2008

According to published reports, a Missouri new and used car dealer is offering either a $250 gas card or a free semiautomatic handgun with purchase. I’m not linking to the dealership because I don’t promote individual dealerships.

That’s on top of other dealers offering $1.99 gas (which trumps Chrysler’s $2.99 gas) and allowing customers to keep all rebates, too. Toyota announced this week that it’s offering low new-car interest rates on certified pre-owned Sequoias and Tundras – two of their most gas guzzling vehicles.

So, what would tempt you to buy an SUV or full-size pickup in this day of high fuel prices?

  • Free gas?
  • Low-cost gas for a couple years?
  • Low-finance rates?
  • a semi-automatic handgun?
  • or, nothing could make me buy one?

I’ll admit the semi-automatic handgun option makes me shudder. Take the poll and feel free to add a comment below or address the issue on the used cars forum page.

Maybe if the semiautomatic handgun was *pointed* at me, then I’d buy an SUV or pickup!

But as soon as I escaped in the gas-guzzler I’d go straight to the police, have the dealers arrested, and hopefully get my money back.

I just sold my Expedition for about $1500 less than it’s blue book value.
I loved it and I mourn it’s going, but I very seldom drive and was still making pymts. If I had unlimited income I’d get one in a heartbeat even if I hadhave it pulled by horses LOL

I will pick E: nothing will make me buy one. Heck, I just got rid of a Ford Ranger and picked up an excellent used Honda ‘03 Civic for under $8K. If I lived in a remote wilderness and had to traverse rough terrain and required a super dependable vehicle to get me around, then I would pick a Toyota SUV or Land Rover SUV…other than that I will agree with Kallie, maybe if the gun was pointed t my head ;)

I’ve heard stories about owners trading in their full-size SUVs at tremendous losses just to get into a fuel-efficient vehicle. Seems to me like a great opportunity to buy a really nice full-size SUV at a great savings, if that’s still what you really need on a day-to-day basis. I’m going to nose around for a nice Range Rover Supercharged…

I would never buy a gun from a used-car dealer. Think about it? That offer has got to backfire.

I don’t know what all the fuss is about. I am continually amazed that everything concerning the price of gasoline is blamed on the SUV. If you need a SUV get one and have a great time. Only a little over 10% of the total energy use in the the USA is from vehicle use. Necessary electrical power generation and other forms of transportation which we need along with power needs for our homes consumes a good part of the total energy use in the US. If we are really concerned about the of fuel costs we need to kick out a few of our liberal congressmen, senators, and environmental people and get fuel production increased in the USA part of the problem would be solved. We have not constructed a new refinery in the US for about 30 years. We have to pay the Middle east not only for the crude, but to refine it for us. We need to use more coal, hydroelectric, and more nuclear generation. There is plenty of oil off the west coast and it is just a matter of time before we wake up and begin making it available. Lets stop blaming SUVs and place the blame where it belongs. SUVs are a small part of the total fuel usage and we are distracted by the liberal press who attempt to deflect the blame to someone other than the real cause of the problem. Lets just beat up people who drive SUVs and that will solve all the fuel problems.

John – not sure people blame SUVs for high gas prices. (I know I don’t). Have to agree with you, though, that we need to do something about the refinery situation in the U.S. Thanks for the thoughtful post.

Think of the stock market…buy low, sell high. We are doing the opposite now with autos.

Bad…Buy high (compacts) sell low (large vehicles).

Good..Sell high (compacts) buy low (large vehicles).
