Would You Buy a Used Car from Barack Obama?

Thursday August 28, 2008

When Richard Nixon ran for re-election in 1972, opponents came up with a poster that said “Would you buy a used car from this man?” Would you buy Barack Obama’s used car? A woman in Naperville, Ill., is hoping you would if Obama gets elected.

According to a story in the Naperville Sun, Liz Murphy bought Barack Obama’s used 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee and has the paperwork to prove it. If Obama becomes our next president, she hopes to sell it for “three to four times” the current trade-in value. One expert thinks that is a slightly ambitious figure. He thinks the bonus would only be 10% above trade-in value.

So, it makes me wonder. Would you pay more money for a vehicle just because a former president drove it before he became president? President Clinton claims to have owned a Chevy El Camino with astro turf in the bed. Would you have paid extra for that? Take my poll and/or comment below.

By the way, a vote for Obama's car isn't necessarily a vote for him! It's not that kind of poll.

I prefer late 1960’s Mustangs.

I think the woman should donate the car to a charity auction because I am sure she will have no trouble finding an Obama groupie! Of course, she is smart to take the risk. If elected, someone would pay more. If people would not buy anything there would be no such thing as Ebay!

I just sold my SUV and had to take less substantially less than Blue Book. I purchased a TDI bug. Im getting more than double the milage. My other vehicle expenses have been cut in about half. So NO She can keep Obamas used car!

Lol. As I was reading the list of choices, I was hoping for one that said No Way, it’s a Guzzler! You didn’t disappoint. Barack Obama would answer the same way. I sold my own Jeep Grand Cherokee for a Prius. It’s time we all did our part to save our ailing planet.

I wouldn’t pay anything extra for it, and I wouldn’t want it anyway, but there’s no doubt that presidential collectibles can be very hot sellers, but I think it depends on what the item is and how popular the president is or was. Lincoln’s hat would be worth more than Harding’s hat, etc.

People will by just about anything, as pointed out by the Ebay comment from Lahle Wolfe. There is no doubt in my mind that Mrs. Murphy will be able to profit from the sale of this vehicle, I would not buy it, but someone certainly will. I like the idea of selling it to a charity, at least some good could come out of that gas guzzler.

It would definitely be something to consider… But never at the price this woman is apparently hoping to sell it for!!! I just don’t have enough money to waste it in collectibles.

Now… On the other hand… Owning Obama’s car would make a nice story!!! Regarding McCain’s properties.. Sorry, not interested. I would have to spend too much in hand sanitizers.

Shaun, when you referred to Lahle Wolfe’s comment as showing that people will buy anything, I thought at first you were referring to her preference for 1960s Mustangs, and I was going to have to hurt you for that! But now I see you were only referring to Ebay. . . .
