Great news for consumers from Washington, which isn’t something you read every day. Automotive News has reported on its website (subscription required) that “The federal government Monday [Sept. 22] will publicly unveil proposed rules requiring insurers and salvage yards to identify for a national database all severely damaged vehicles they acquire.”
According to Automotive News, “The National Automobile Dealers Association, automakers and consumer groups have been pressuring the Justice Department to issue the rules, originally mandated by a 1992 anti-theft law (emphasis mine).”
This could eventually eliminate moving used cars from one state to another to “wash the title,” or in effect get it a clean bill of health. Once this new system goes into place, it will become increasingly difficult for shady operators to move cars around the country for ill-gotten profit.

It is about time.
I think there needs to be measures taken to stop dishonest people from washing the title, if this will help then it needs to be done.
A salvage title car can be a good deal, but it can be very bad too. People need to be aware of what they’re buying.
