The Pontiac Solstice comes to mind. When I wrote a new car review of this white-hot convertible in 2006, I mentioned a dealership in Maine had two on its lot with no markup or “adjusted market value” in dealer-speak. A reader from Connecticut was willing to drive to Maine to buy one.
Lots of people make that mistake. They pay extra for the privilege of being among the first owners and then try to recoup that misplaced investment when it’s time to sell the car.
It’s still true that first-year models have problems that get worked out by the second year. It’s not as prevalent as it used to be but it still happens enough.
