Understanding a CARFAX Report

Introduction

The CARFAX Home Page

In addition to a vehicle inspection or road test, another way to ensure you are purchasing a reliable used car is with a CARFAX report.

A "CARFAX" is a vehicle history report purchased from a company named CARFAX. When you order a report, and then supply CARFAX the VIN (vehicle identification number) of a vehicle, they research and compile all of the known history of that vehicle based on public records. The information is summarized in a single multi-page report.

CARFAX can protect you from a vehicle that has been:

  • Totaled in an accident
  • Flooded and destroyed
  • Returned as a lemon
  • A victim of odometer fraud

Getting a CARFAX report is simple, and it just takes a few moments as the results are displayed online.

There are two pricing structures:

  • $19.99 for a SINGLE report
  • $24.99 for UNLIMITED reports

If you are in the market for a used vehicle, it makes sense to purchase the “Unlimited” reports, as this will allow you to run reports on multiple vehicles you visit and road test.
