From the article: Advice on GM Used Cars: Stay Away for Now
GM has declared bankruptcy. Hundreds of dealers are going to see their doors closed by October 2010. Their stock is essentially worthless. Want my advice on GM used cars? This is a lousy time to buy one from a dealer. Primary reason to stay away from a GM dealer selling used cars is you have no idea what dealers are closing by October 2010. You’ll have no built-in support network if your dealership closes. Sure, the federal government is guaranteeing all warranty work, but you’ll be at the bottom of the pecking order at the new GM dealership. Agree or Disagree?
Let the situation dictate.
- Unless you are new to your community, you probably have a good idea of which dealers are most reputable and most likely financially sound. As for the cars themselves, I would use Consumer Reports and Carfax as a guide. GM has made a lot of rubbish, but the General has made a lot of great stuff. Do your homework and don't pass on a good car just because a GM dealer is selling it. I would rather buy a GM car from a GM dealer, than from a dealer of a competing make. I would wonder what is was about that car that motivated the owner to change makes. On the same token, I would really look closely at a non-GM used car being sold by a GM dealer. I said look closely, not eliminate! I bought a Mercury Tracer from a Toyota dealer; great car. I bought a Winstar from a Honda dealer; bad move. There are good GM's and Fords, there are bad GM's and Fords.

- There will never be a better time, than to buy now. Dealers will be discounting heavily. Demand the deal you deserve.

disagree
- Shop like you would shop for a private sale......only at a dealer. There are good deals to be had, only your possibilities are larger and displayed better. Shop smart ....like always!

Agree
- I certainly won't chance buying a used GM vehicle at this time.

- Having bought and driven automobiles for over 50 years, I would no longer buy a GM or any of the following; they build overrated rust buckets and maintenance intensive crap: All GM past and present, All Chrysler, Fiat, Hyundai, some Fords, some Kia, BMW, Volvo, some VW. American manufacturers ignored Dr. Deming and refused to go to the shop floor and ask those who build them, how to make better product - greedy management knew better for 50 years. Who listened, Japan and Germany. Consistent products built by quality oriented, homogeneous, societies using technology and robotics to compete and beat American junk. Buy Mazda, Honda, Toyota and Mercedes Benz or some Fords. What is needed are cars that are lighter, long lasting and emissions considerate. Built with carbon fiber bodies and built-in color, stainless steel exhaust and suspension systems, aluminum components where practicable and including modern, enduring styles with cockpit comfort armrest seating for openers.
