From the article: Advice and Tips on How Cash for Clunkers (or CARS) Works
President Obama has signed into law the Cash for Clunkers bill that awards anywhere up to $4500 for trading in a used car with low fuel economy for a more efficient new car. What advice would you give people buying a new car under the Cash for Clunkers program? Tips from Readers
More Government Over Reaching
- This program and anything else the Gov. gets involved in is a bad idea. They promoting bad behavior. It don't make sence for people to buy cars they can't afford. This is what happened with housing market. It would not surprise me that most of these people driving these new cars are the ones that don't have any medical insurance. That leaves me as a tax payer to pay for their new car and will end up being forced out of my medical insurance. People will soon find out that nothing is free.

Success with Cash for Clunkers
- Got a new Nissan Frontier for almost half MSRP - $4500 Cash for Clunkers, $3000 rebate from Nissan and $1,000 off MSRP from the dealer - total of $8500 ain't chump change! My 89' Chevy pickup was going on a wing and a prayer - fortunately I got a new rig for a used car price. When I file my taxes I can write off the sales tax too.

mpg
- The government is using the clunker mpg for the car when it was new. Mpg is much lower on old worn out carburated engines.

Finally
- I was always taught to be independent my whole life so when i finally won an 86 chevy blazer a couple years back, my high school life had been set. Of course without working windows in Idahos 100 degree heat and locks that i had to glue into the door frame to offer myself a false appearance of protection i understand what its like. Now im 18 with my parents making too much money for me to qualify for any sort of grant for school but barely enough for them to live paycheck to paycheck, i get that the economy sucks, but with college just around the corner and working 2 minumum wage jobs a vehicle is something i need. I think this is great and i cant wait to find something small and fuel efficient!

Punished for being efficient...
- ...well my wife and I would love to buy a new car and this would have been the incentive to get me to do so. We can afford to pay cash for something and help kickstart the auto market but of course her 99 Accord is too fuel efficient. Thanks Obama for your random 18 mpg requirement. I'll keep my money and wait another year or two.

Have To Buy a New Car
- The Cash for Clunkers Law only allows you to buy a new car with the government rebate. Government only wants to get rid of fuel burning used cars by making you buy an expensive new car!

USED
- IF I HAVE A 1995 USED CAR CAN I TRADE IT IN ON ANOTHER USED CAR? OR DO I HAVE TO BUY A NEW CAR?

misguided
- This program will hurt the lower income people... the people that usually buy cars under $3,500 will be forced out of the used car market... maybe the true intent is to get people out of cars and into public transportation. Also hurts the small used car business, they no longer have cheap cars to sell since the clunkers will be crushed.

cash for clunkers
- I like to know why I cant use this program to buy a motorcycle new from a dealer? It seems prejeditial to other forms of transportation which in fact increases gas mileage which should also be a factor other than bailing out a faultering auto industry. What about saving gas and lessining our independance on forien oil? I think this is a big mistake if not allowed to buy anything new that helps the consumer save out of pocket exspense for gas over the next ten years.

gov in the car biz
- Manufacturers have tried this for years, it's called rebates. Nothing but a gimmick. Now the government has got into the car biz.

Cash For Clunkers
- If it really is a worn out clunker I'm all for this idea. The problem is it pollutes the world much more each time they build a new car than thirty years of driving a decent older car possibly can. This is an allowance to help out the new car firms who are absolutely poisening the world..
