Vehix Makes Listings Free for Consumers

Tuesday July 29, 2008

Vehix.com, in an attempt to grow its online listings, has foregone charging consumers for listing their vehicles for sale. The site used to charge $30 for a listing. (I take a look at selling your used car online here.)

The basic premise, says Vehix.com in a press release, is consumers that list their used cars for sale also search for used cars on Vehix.com. The free classified system also means Vehix.com’s dealer partners will have more used vehicles to select from because they troll the site looking for used cars to purchase.

My basic take is use Vehix.com as just one of your sources of advertising. I did a thoroughly unscientific review of the site and found only one private seller out of 100 listed for cars between 1997-2000. That could work to your advantage, but it’s also a disadvantage because it means people aren’t used to turning to Vehix.Com for private sales, at least here in the Northeast.

Too bad that Vehix won’t have any extra money for advertising, since they aren’t charging for listings.

If they raised public awareness, I bet a lot of people would list with them…

It’s an interesting conundrum. If you’re not getting any ads, you’re not really losing money by giving them away free. With more listings, though, they’ll be able to attract paid dealer listings.
