CarFax Not Always a Gimmick
- Terry - CarFax can be more than a gimmick if you know how to read it. The value can come from seeing police activity associated with accidents, a total lack of dealership maintenance, cars titled in other states where there may have been flooding or other weather problems. It's more than just a gimmick but it is not the be all and end all. You're right that an inspection by your mechanic is the most important step. If you want, read my article on reading a CarFax report . It could help you get more from the report.

CarFax report
- It is my opinion that a CarFax report is a gimmick. I ordered one, for $25. All it told me was that I was the owner of the car, and I had learned the car had suffered hurricane damage at the dealership. The only information you can count on is the name of the past owners. Any repairs, body or mechanical, done at a non-participating shop will not show up on the report. If you can't take the car to your mechanic, look elsewhere to buy a car.

Some suggestions
- This series article is a brilliant guidance.I humbly suggest following two more points : (1) Whether the papers i.e Registration/blue book/Road permit are o.k or renewed properly,(2) who handled the vehicle previously and what was his status. With thanks.

Car questons
- I let the car talk to me, it won't lie!! Check the pedals for wear against mileage shown. Check the bumpers and doors for dents and scratches, shows poor driver. Check the pipes for carbon, oil user. Listen to the engine, little clicks or knocks spell big repairs, soon. Check the seat belts for regular use, careful driver. Look for rust, not a California car.

What I always say to a sales person
- When I got to buy either a new or used vehicle, I go look into the managers office and look on the wall for the salesman who has had the least sales that month. I know he will be willing to make a good deal. The first thing I say to the sales person is, that I have cash and good credit. Then I say, now lets get this straight ok. I dont need to buy a car from you but you need to sell a car to get a paycheck and from what ive seen on the office wall, you need to sell me a vehicle to keep your job.
